Introduction
On the museum’s and on my own behalf I wish to thank
the mail artists, who have contributed to the Italian
“Museo dei Tarocchi”s “Tarot Christmas Tree
Trumps” project. Despite a relatively small number of
contributions a variety of media were used: digital art,
handmade collages, pen and ink drawings,
handcoloured drawings, even rubber stamping and
embroidery.
Totally I received 32 contributions by 28 different
artists from 9 different countries. 7 of them could
unfortunately not, even with my best will and phantasy,
be associated with any of the tarot majors, which
the theme was. You will, anyway, find them at the end
of this list. Other were not obviously related to a named
tarot major arcana card, so I had to make a guess
myself. When that happened, it is noted in this documentation.
Three tarot majors are not represented
among the contributions: Magician, Justice and
Judgement. One contributor sent sheets rendering a
whole set of 22+2 majors.

It was with some degree of hesitation I took upon me
the task of coordinating the “Tarot Christmas Tree
Trumps”project. I have been out of international mail
art for many years, actually since 1998-1999, when the
so-called “faker” pestered the mail art scene by sending
false invitations to mailart-projects, which did not
exist. Since 1997 my projects have been “invitational”,
i.e. invitations were sent directly to a selected number
of artists and not, as practice is in “international mail
art”, distributed freely in the network, so that everyone,
who stumbled over a running project, could contribute.
The first four of my mail art projects dealing
with tarot were open to all and took place each year
during 1993-96. My last project was “Mail Artists’
Tarot 1998", the outcome of which were tree major
arcana series combined in one (printed) deck, was
invitational.
The invitations for “Tarot Christmas Tree Trumps”
were sent partly by letter, through the official postal
system, to a number of earlier contacts and partly by
email. About 50 in each group. Besides this, the invitation
reached other potential contributors by being
forwarded or mentioned on websites and in blogs. Six
postal letters were returned due to no longer valid
addresses; some of them took a month or more to be
returned from nearby countries. So much for the
postal service.
In the heydays back in the 1990’s there were hardly any
day without mailart related mail in the letterbox
It has now for almost a couple of months been a great
and nostalgic pleasure to look into the mailbox every
morning to see if any new and welcome contributions
had shown up. I will not wonder if there are still one or
two delayed sendings on their way.
Thanks again!
